new to real nappies

Postby smiler123 on Tue Apr 22, 2008 1:08 pm

hello all
I have an 18 month old daughter and am due my 2nd in september.
I have a real interest in using real nappies but im worried about the initial costs to get going and also the many different types of nappies.
I have seen alot of trial packs but they still are quite dear & dont want to spend too too much to see whats right for me.
I would consider buying second hand if in good condition but I dont know where to start looking.
any tips please???

Your best bet for 2nd hand is to use the used nappy company auction site or there is another one but I cant remember what it's called. If you google "used nappies" you can find them.

I am selling my cloth nappies as my daughter has now grown out of them and I need to buy the next size up (actually I'm going to buy one size nappies, which are adjustable).

There is such an array of nappy types out there - two part systems, where you use a wrap (plastic, fleece or wool) over the top of a cloth nappy, either shaped ones or folded terry squares.

You can also get all in one nappies, which have both parts all in one (pretty obvious that one!!). They do take longer to dry though.

Even better, you can also get pocket nappies which are similar to all in ones except that there is a slit at the back of the inside of the nappy, into which you stuff inserts. This means that once you've stuffed all your nappies, they are as ready to go as a disposable but they also can be taken apart for easy washing and drying.

You should also consider cost. Pockets are more expensive but if you buy the one size type, you only need to buy them once, where as other systems you will need to buy two, and maybe three sizes as your baby grows. Terry squares are the cheapest but you have all the hassle of folding these, but they are good for newborns!

You should go along to a nappucino - they are very good for getting to see and touch all the different types, and there are lots of people who can give you advice :D

Hi There. Yes, by buying second hand nappies you can spend less money and get to try out lots of types. The main websites I am aware of are
www.usednappies.co.uk
and www.thenappysite.co.uk
You could also borrow a nappy trial kit which costs a minimal amount. If you are local to Shropshire, visit the nappy trial kits section of the website (www.shropshirenappy.org.uk)

I'm pregnant with my first baby (only just!!) due in March 2009. We recycle everything we can so I do not agree with using disposables, I'll be interested to hear about experiences with different brands of nappies before choosing which brand I use.

Hi there, PolarHax. There are loads of nappies out there to choose from, and it can be quite bewildering as the more you look into it, the more complicated it seems! If you are local to Shropshire I'd recommend coming along to a nappuccino, perhaps in a few months time when you are further into your pregnancy. You can see the nappies and chat about them with people who have used them and it makes it all much clearer! Details can be found on our website www.shropshirenappy.org.uk.
