Your best bet for 2nd hand is to use the used nappy company auction site or there is another one but I cant remember what it's called. If you google "used nappies" you can find them.
I am selling my cloth nappies as my daughter has now grown out of them and I need to buy the next size up (actually I'm going to buy one size nappies, which are adjustable).
There is such an array of nappy types out there - two part systems, where you use a wrap (plastic, fleece or wool) over the top of a cloth nappy, either shaped ones or folded terry squares.
You can also get all in one nappies, which have both parts all in one (pretty obvious that one!!). They do take longer to dry though.
Even better, you can also get pocket nappies which are similar to all in ones except that there is a slit at the back of the inside of the nappy, into which you stuff inserts. This means that once you've stuffed all your nappies, they are as ready to go as a disposable but they also can be taken apart for easy washing and drying.
You should also consider cost. Pockets are more expensive but if you buy the one size type, you only need to buy them once, where as other systems you will need to buy two, and maybe three sizes as your baby grows. Terry squares are the cheapest but you have all the hassle of folding these, but they are good for newborns!
You should go along to a nappucino - they are very good for getting to see and touch all the different types, and there are lots of people who can give you advice
